Bessemer Memories

For the longest time the Bessemer & Lake Erie maintained its identity even after the Canadian National takeover in 2004.

During my many visits to the B&LE I was greeted with the Bessemer orange such as the image on top that I made on July 6, 2007.

However on Aug. 20, 2001, a strange but more than welcome visitor appeared.

The Bennett Levin Pennsylvania Railroad E8A locomotives pulled a private car excursion over the Bessemer. That train had arrived in Erie, Pennsylvania, the previous day

On Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, the special departed Erie on CSX and got onto the Bessemer for a rare mileage trip and is shown above in a view made from the U.S. Route 20 bridge in Conneaut as the train snakes along Conneaut Creek and passes beneath the Nickel Plate trestle.

The Fort Pitt Still Looked Good late in the PRR Era

It is most likely an afternoon in late 1967 and Pennsylvania Railroad Nos. 4293 and 4255 head a westbound Fort Pitt through Canton west of WANDLE Tower.

There are four baggage cars and four passenger cars in the train. Even at this late time in PRR’s passenger service, this train looked good.

Very likely it was nearing Thanksgiving or Christmas because it was not unusual to find one baggage car and two passenger cars making up the consist.

On the right side of the image there is a railroad pole line of telegraph wires. Yes, the wires cast shadows, but that was part of railroading’s history at the time.

Thankfully, the major shadow on the building wasn’t on the locomotives.

It’s Been a Good Week for Heritage Units

It has been a good week for Norfolk Southern heritage units with several in and around the Cleveland area.

I elected to skip the Nickel Plate Road unit on a stone train last Sunday due to the fact that the Wheeling & Lake Erie depot in Kent was being moved that same morning. That trumped an H unit in my book.

There were back-to-back trains with H unit power early in the week. These included the Southern unit leading an oil can train followed by a double H set on empty hoppers, both seen at Hudson.

On Wednesday the Penn Central heritage locomotive led an oil train that is seen here at Atwater. The GoRail also paid a visit and the original NS unit was due through on Thursday night.

Although not an NS heritage unit, this ex-Pennsylvania Railroad E8A could be called heritage. It’s nothing special as far as photos go, but I just wanted something on a piece of track that doesn’t see much action. That’s the Interstate 480 Valley View bridge in the background.

Rare Mileage Trip Plannned in SW Pennsylvania

Wisconsin-based High Iron Travel has announced a private passenger car trip on freight-only tracks in southwestern Pennsylvania that were once owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The trip, named “Coal Goes To War,” will operate on July 28 between Pittsburgh and the West Virginia border on a route that primarily handles Norfolk Southern coal trains today.

The trip is a fund-raising venture to help pay for the restoration of Alto Tower in Altoona, Pa.

The special will be pulled by Bennett Levine’s Pennsy E units and feature an all private cars consist.

More details about the trip will be release once final approval is granted by NS and pricing is worked out with Amtrak.

Pennsy E units Visit Ohio, Again

Bennett Levin’s E8A locomotives made their second appearance in Ohio of 2011 on Sunday (August 7). The locomotives, adorned in a Pennsylvania Railroad livery, passed through Ohio en route to the National Train Day celebration in Chicago in May before returning to their Philadelphia area home.

On Sunday, the Pennsy E units were pulling the Pacific Express, a private car charter train that originated in Hoboken, New Jersey, on Friday and ended its journey in Philadelphia on Monday. The train traveled over a primarily former Erie Railroad routing until getting to Youngstown where it assumed a mostly all former PRR trek except for a stretch of former New York Central track on the Norfolk Southern  Youngstown Line.

Several Akron Railroad Club members were trackside to photograph the special train including Roger Durfee, Alan Savage, Richard Thompson, Cody Zamostny, John Puda, Peter Bowler and Craig Sanders.
