NS to Buying Renewable Energy in Pennsylvania

October 9, 2021

Norfolk Southern said it will purchase renewable energy to power its operations in Altoona and Reading, Pennsylvania.

In a news release, NS said it will purchase electricity through agreements with Penelec and Met-Ed utilities that is generated from such renewable sources as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass or hydroelectric.

NS said the agreements will offset emissions produced from the electricity used to power NS offices and facilities in the regions, known as Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

After the agreement is implemented renewable energy sources will account for 28 percent of NS electricity consumption in Pennsylvania.

The Class 1 railroad had earlier set a goal of having 30 percent of its total energy use across its 22-state network be from renewable sources by 2030.
