Grant to be Used to Move Historic Rail Depot

December 17, 2021

The Berks County (Pennsylvania) Redevelopment Agency has awarded a $75,000 grant to the Longswamp Township Historical Society, which plans to use the money to relocate an 1870s era railroad station in Mertztown, Pennsylvania.

The grant will supplement $195,000 raised locally thus far to move the depot to Longswamp Township Park. The project cost is estimated at $310,000.

Once moved, the depot will serve as a museum and historical library.

Located 12 miles southwest of Allentown, the Mertztown depot was the last standing, original remnant of the East Pennsylvania Railroad Company.

CN Grant to Help Restore SRI Coaches

March 24, 2021

The Steam Railroading Institute will use a donation from Canadian National to repair three passenger cars.

The Owosso-based organization said the CN grant of $2,000 will be applied toward repair the brake valves on former CN coaches Nos. 5447 and 5646, so they can be used in excursion service.

Some of the grant will be used for window refurbishment and seal replacement on former Pennsylvania Railroad coach No. 147.

“This will allow the continuation of repairs to three of our coaches and will be a significant and important job for our volunteers to better learn the inner workings of our passenger car fleet,” said Aaron Farmer, the institute’s mechanical manager, in a statement.

Trust Awards Grant for C&O 1309 Restoration

March 26, 2020

The John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust has awarded a $10,000 grant for the restoration of Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 No. 1309.

The grant will be used to pay to have two heavy duty cranes set the boiler of the locomotive on its wheels.

The grant is the second awarded by the trust for restoration work on the 1309, which is being undertaken by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

A grant awarded last year was used to purchase jacketing and insulation.

The crane lift is expected to occur in the next quarter of this year although that will hinge on any restrictions imposed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
