ARRC to View Eastern Coalfield Railroading

The September meeting of the Akron Railroad Club will take attendees to the coalfields of the eastern United States.

Akron resident Richard Thompson, a former ARRC junior member, will show digital images of coal railroads.

He will show Norfolk Southern operations on the former Virginian Railway and CSX trains on the former Clinchfield Railroad. The meeting will begin on Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. in the social hall of the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, in Akron.

After the business meeting the program will get underway at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Richard Thompson to Present ARRC Sept. 27 Program

The Akron Railroad Club will hold its September meeting on Friday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at the New Horizons Christian Church at 290 Darrow Road in Akron.

Former member Richard Thompson will present a digital images program titled Lost Transmissions.

Rich began photographing trains as a teen. Now in his 20s he has seen a lot change over the past decade.

His program will feature the Class 1 railroads of Northeast Ohio and showcase scenes that can no longer be photographed.

This will include such things as locomotives, signals and railroad infrastructure.

The ARRC has also announced that its annual banquet will be held Dec. 7 at the New Era restaurant in Akron between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

More information including the program to be presented that evening will be released later this year.

Thompson to Present at Next ARRC Meeting

Richard Thompson will present a digital images program at the Sept. 28 Akron Railroad Club meeting.

Rich is a former ARRC member who has extensively photographed railroad operations in Akron and Northeast Ohio.

He’ll draw from his collection for his program as well as feature images made during his travels to nearby states.

Word has it that Rich will also include some of his nature and landscape photographs made in the region’s parks.

The September ARRC meeting will begin with a short business meeting at 8 p.m. followed by the program at approximately 8:30 p.m. The club meets at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, in Akron.

Following the meeting, some members gather at the Eat ‘n Park restaurant at Howe and Main streets in Cuyahoga Falls for a late dinner, dessert or an early breakfast.

Visitors are always welcome at Akron Railroad Club meetings.
