R&N Owner Makes Donation to Pennsylvania City

August 5, 2020

Andy Mueller Jr., the owner and CEO of Pennsylvania regional railroad Reading & Northern, has donated $10,000 to the borough of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, to share with local charities.

Mueller had in May donated $10,000 to the borough’s first responders and paid for a new passenger platform in lieu of local funding being used during the 2020 pandemic and recession.

In February R&N had pledged to return passenger service to the city’s 146-year old train station.

Tamaqua had agreed to pay $36,000 for the platform and had already paid the railroad $20,000 when Mueller said he would be donating $20,000 to the borough to be distributed to its choice of charities over the next two years.

In a statement, Mueller said that once the pandemic began, he recognized the community could use assistance in the difficult times.

Since May, R&N has operated two ride and dine trips from Reading Outer Station to Tamaqua.

In the meantime construction has continued on the Tamaqua platform with paving, fencing and lighting needed to be installed to give it a Victorian era appearance.

That work is expected to be completed by Labor Day.

Pennsylvania regional railroad Reading & Northern has donated $10,000 to Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, to help it during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funds will be allocated among seven emergency services.

In a news release, R&N said the donation was part of a plan announced earlier this year to donate $10,000 per year over the next two years to Tamaqua for charities of the town’s choice.

The first donation of $10,000 was made early to help the community, R&N officials.

In February, R&N agreed to bring excursion trains back Tamaqua.

R&N Announces New Destination for Tourist Trains

Pennsylvania-based Reading & Northern will return excursion train service to the 146-year-old depot in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.

The railroad plans to build a new boarding platform at the station, a project that will be funded by a public-private partnership with the borough of Tamaqua.

Construction is expected to begin this spring with the first trains leaving the station in time for the community’s Summerfest on June 21.

R&N said it will also offer “ride-and-dine” trips from its new Reading Outer Station to Tamaqua. Trains will leave Reading in mid-afternoon and stop at the new Tamaqua train station, where riders disembark and dine at a local restaurant.
