Canadian Two for Tuesday

January 11, 2022

We’re going north of the border into Ontario for a two for Tuesday feature. Better warm up those vocal cords before you start singing O Canada.

In the top image Paul Woodring and I were at Bayview Junction, Ontario, in July 1980 when I photographed VIA Rail Canada 6530 heading east to Toronto, as it meets a Canadian National freight.

In the bottom image A Toronto GO Transit commuter train is eastbound on March 23, 1982, Cabin D in Toronto.

Steam Saturday: Cab Ride North of the Border

November 27, 2021

Bob Farkas and Paul Woodring were in Toronto on June 19, 1980, where they visited the Canadian National Spadina engine facility. Not only were they able to make photographs of CN 4-8-2 No. 6060 they also got a cab ride.

The 6060 was one of 20 Mountain type locomotives built by Montreal Locomotive Works for CN in 1944.

Retired in 1960, the 6060 was placed on static display in Jasper, Alberta. Restored to operating condition in 1972, the 6060 saw excursion duties for CN through the 1980s.

It has since operated at times and is now awaiting another restoration pending adequate funding.

CVSR Locomotive North of the Border

August 21, 2017

Many of you are aware that some of the locomotives used on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad once operated used in Canada. A few were even built there.

In this image, it is June 1972 in Toronto and Canadian National No. 6777 (now on the CVSR) sits at Toronto Union Station between assignments.
