Made in Ohio, Not Out West

Although this may look as if it were taken out west, this is an eastbound Wheeling & Lake Erie train headed for Rook Yard in Pennsylvania. On the point is SD40T-2 No. 5413. Note the very small “WE” above the number on the cab’s side. The train was photographed east of Harmon on Sept. 21, 2010.

Getting Lucky in Lodi Two for Tuesday

Somehow the passenger station in Lodi, Ohio, built by the original Wheeling & Lake Erie survived for decades after passenger service ended. By the time I first encountered it, the Lodi depot no longer served any function for the railroad.

The two images shown above were both made on Nov. 22, 2006, and feature eastbounds on the W&LE Brewster Subdivision passing the weathered structure.

I made several photographs with this depot over the years including some with the Orrville Railroad Heritage Society Santa train.

The ORHS Santa trains are only a memory now, but the depot has fared better. A local group acquired it and has renovated it. Today it looks pretty sharp and serves as a railroad museum.

Crossing the AC&Y Trestle Over the Canal

The heritage of the Wheeling & Lake Erie’s Akron Subdivision dates Northern Ohio Railway, which would later become part of the Akron, Canton & Youngstown that began operations in 1912.

One lasting feature of the AC&Y is a 13-span 690-foot trestle built in 1926 over the Ohio & Erie Canal in downtown Akron.

This image was made on Aug. 22, 2006, in early evening. My memory is that I was on my way home after a trip to Coshocton to discuss an upcoming Akron Railroad Club steam excursion behind Ohio Central No. 1293.

I’m not happy about the utility pole in the image, but I couldn’t get into a better position to get both locomotives. The view is at the far eastern end of the bridge.

Stone Train in Akron

Two of this trio of locomotives pulling a stone train in Akron on Aug. 1, 2015, wear liveries that suggest they once worked for BNSF. SD40-2 No. 6388 wears Burlington Northern colors while the middle unit has a BNSF scheme. The train is shown on the CSX New Castle Subdivision.

Plenty of Horsepower

It was an odd site seeing two Wheeling & Lake Erie locomotives teaming up to move a lone gondola filled with scrap metal on the Hartland Subdivision northwest of Spencer.

I didn’t record any information about this train, which I found on Aug. 7, 2009, but it probably is the Cleveland steel train that runs to and from Campbell Road Yard in Cleveland via CSX and Norfolk Southern trackage rights.

W&LE No. 301 was at this time painted in a livery that combined elements of the Wheeling and Denver & Rio Grande Western.

In fact this GP40 was once a D&RGW locomotive although it had been built for Penn Central. The unit was rebuilt by the W&LE into a GP40-3 and has been given a W&LE livery.

Some Varnish on a Wheeling & Lake Erie Train

The Wheeling & Lake Erie Lima train No. 430 had a special consist of five passenger cars and a former Nickel Plate Road GP30 added to its compliment of freight cars on Sunday.

I caught it at several location with what turned out to be the first significant snowfall of the year.  The 430 was led by Wheeling No. 5314, an ex-Denver & Rio Grande Western tunnel motor.

The GP30 and passenger cars are going to Brewster to run employee Santa trips the day after Thanksgiving

The first two images were made at Upper Sandusky. The third image shows former Nickel Plate passenger car City of Chicago.

In the fourth photograph are the new signals at North Robinson, Ohio.  These look like Pennsylvania Railroad style position light signals but in fact are new replacements with LED lights

The bottom photograph was made under the signal bridge at Crestline. All of these images were made on the rails of the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern.

Westbound at Creston

Wheeling & Lake Erie SD40T-2 No. 8795 is on the point of a westbound in Creston, Ohio on Nov. 15, 2015. This locomotive was acquired by the W&LE in September 2014 from the Squaw Creek Southern and placed into service the following month. It was originally built for the Southern Pacific in April 1980 and also spent time on the Union Pacific locomotive roster. It has since been renumbered as Wheeling 5411.

Shuffling in Spencer

It’s a Friday afternoon in May 2008 and I’m out doing some railfanning before tonight’s Akron Railroad Club meeting. Ed Ribinskas is along with me.

This is one of two Wheeling & Lake Erie trains we caught on this day. The train shown above has come into town on the Hartland Subdivision and its motive power has cut off and gone around the connection to the Akron Subdivision to work the yard.

For some reason the power has been separated. Perhaps one unit is being dropped here to be picked up by another train.

Later in we would catch a westbound empty stone train that we would chase as far as New London. We photographed it at Firestone Road and from the overpass on the north side of New London that goes over the CSX Greenwich Subdivision.

That train was worth chasing because it had a former Wisconsin Central unit on the point and a former Denver & Rio Grande unit tailing. But that train is for another post on another day.

What I liked about the image above is that it conveys the feel a railroad at work. As one crew member rides the lead locomotive another walks on the ground nearby wearing a hard hat and safety vest.

Cars sit in the yard tracks on both sides of the former Akron, Canton & Youngstown mainline waiting to be picked up.

There is even one of the old searchlight signals that guarded this diamond. Those signals are gone now, replaced with modern devices.

The hardware in Spencer may have changed but one thing remains constant. It’s still a place to find the railroad at work.

Another Wheeling 2 for Tuesday

Here are a pair of Wheeling & Lake Erie locomotives that each feature a touch of another railroad.

In the top image SD40-2 No. 6316 still wears is Wisconsin Central livery as it helps pull a westbound in Navarre on September 5, 2016.

In the bottom photo, GP35-3 No. 107 pays tribute to the Akron, Canton & Youngstown. It is shown in Canton on Nov. 4, 2011.

Another Wheeling Twofer

Wheeling & Lake Erie GP40-3 No. 302, wearing a variation of the Denver & Rio Grande Western livery, is shown in the top image rolling westbound past the old scale house just east of their yard in Brewster on Oct. 20, 2010.

Today this is single track, and the scale house has been removed.

No. 302 was built in August 1968 for Penn Central and was on the Conrail roster before being sold to the D&RGW.

In the bottom image, a dramatic portrayal of SD40 No. 3032 find the former Missouri Pacific unit running westbound through Navarre on Sept. 8, 2014.

It’s a good example of how light and shadows can enhance an image.
